A member‑exclusive benefit designed to support sustainable private practice
The AMA Queensland Medical Costs Guide is a resource developed exclusively for AMA Queensland members (excluding non-financial and student members). The Guide was developed by health economists in consultation with Queensland-based rural, regional and metropolitan specialists from a range of craft groups. It is a valuable tool for private practices to consider when determining their unique business needs and fee settings.
This resource is provided as a guide only and members must independently set their own fees. AMA Queensland also recommends members use the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges Ethical Billing and Fee Transparency framework in conjunction with the Medical Costs Guide.
Why the AMA Queensland Medical Costs Guide matters
- It reflects geographic cost variations across Queensland
Costs differ significantly between metropolitan, regional and rural practices. Existing national guides were not updated frequently enough to reflect the true cost of delivering medical care across our vast state, from Cairns to Coolangatta, Cloncurry and everywhere in between. Our new guide ensures these differences are recognised, helping members determine their fees fairly and operate sustainably. This will also be an essential resource for practices following enactment of national laws enabling publication of all specialist fees on the Australian Government’s Medical Costs Finder website.
- A clearer picture of practice expenses
The guide is based on key cost drivers of private practice, including:
- Staffing levels and wages
- Premises, equipment and technology
- Insurance, training and compliance expenses
- Hours of operation
- Stronger advocacy on your behalf
The guide strengthens AMA Queensland’s ability to advocate for:
- Sustainable funding models
- Increased MBS rebates
- Better policy decisions that reflect the realities of delivering care in Queensland
